Oakville Ontario is an attractive and popular town that was first established back in 1827 and has grown to a population of around 182,000 people. Each and every year the population increases as the town continues to attract families, professionals and seniors who all want to experience the fabulous way of life that Oakville offers.
Where is Oakville, Ontario?
At around 40 kilometres west of downtown Toronto, Oakville is ideally situated for anyone who has to work in the big city. The highway connections into Toronto are excellent with both the QEW and the Express Toll Route easily accessible from many of the town’s neighbourhoods, and there’s the GO Train too with several stations right here in Oakville to choose from if you prefer the reliability of the train service.
The town is within the Greater Toronto Area and it’s considered to be a suburb, but, even though downtown Toronto is fairly close by, the town has its own individual appeal.
How Oakville Has Grown
Did you know that Oakville is one of Canada’s most affluent cities and that it has some of the most expensive real estate in the country? It’s true – Oakville Ontario started out like most of the other towns in southern Ontario. Being on the lakeshore, industries like shipbuilding, timber shipment, and later oil refineries boosted the town’s economy. Ford made their Canadian headquarters here in Oakville from 1953, and they’re still here today, but, back then Oakville had a population of only around 7,000 people.
Between 1961 and 1971 the population suddenly shot up from 10,366 to over 61,000 and it’s continued to climb every year. The town has grown enormously from the original streets in Olde Oakville as new neighbourhoods have been added and are still being added today. But, even though many people have moved here Oakville Ontario has retained its small town feel and planners have been careful to keep many parks and public areas for its residents to enjoy.
Those attracted to Oakville in the Halton Region are drawn to their many desirable areas. A few of the more common ones are Joshua Creek in South East Oakville, and Bronte Village and Kerr Village in South West Oakville.
Why is Oakville So Desirable?
So what is it about Oakville Ontario that makes it so desirable? Proximity to Toronto definitely helps, but then there are other towns even closer to Toronto if that’s what you want. Maybe it’s the fact that Oakville is close, but not too close to the big city; it doesn't feel overcrowded, noisy, and dirty here.
Being on Lake Ontario is a great advantage for the town of Oakville too. The lakeshore setting makes for some beautiful parks and there are beaches to enjoy in the summer. Recreation is definitely plentiful, from parks and hiking trails, to arenas, recreation centres, golf courses, ice rinks, and more on dry land, then there are all the water activities you can enjoy while living here too such as sailing, power boating, canoeing and more.
Oakville Ontario has been attracting families in their droves and one reason for this is the great schools. The town’s schools are among the best in Ontario and there’s a large number of private schools here too. But you don’t have to pay for a private education to give your child a great start in life as Oakville has one of the best rated public secondary schools in the province.
